Cedar Shakes & Shingles
Today cedar shakes and shingles are cut to length and thickness from the best part of the tree, the heartwood. Heartwood tends to be straight grained, which means it can be manufactured into products that will remain flat and precise, making it inherently more durable and unmatched in beauty.
Shingles are sawn flat on both faces, giving them a relatively smooth surface appearance while shakes are split along the grain for a more natural and textured look. Taper-sawn shakes combine the thick dimensions of a shake with the clean, tailored look of a shingle.
Why is wood better than the alternatives?
Wood is the only 100% renewable resource available in the roofing industry today. It is a nontoxic, replenish-able resource that can be naturally recycled. The longer durability of cedar roofing materials outweighs any initial savings from using synthetic products.
Many synthetics and wood substitutes are marketed as “eco-friendly”, when in fact they are made of materials that are mined or pumped from the earth, and cannot be replaced. In addition, the energy used to manufacture these alternative products and the subsequent pollution created during this process, is a much more serious issue than wood harvesting has ever been.
The forest industry is regulated and must replace what it removes; the same cannot be said of petrochemicals and ores, all used to create synthetic roofing materials. And wood is biodegradable, unlike the substitute products that can linger in landfills for decades, if not longer.
